Who Needs It
Under section 139 of Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Code, employers and supervisors must protect a worker from falling when the worker could fall:
If a fall protection system has to be used, section 141 requires the employer to train the worker in using it safely before the worker goes into that area. In practice, that covers roofers, framers, ironworkers, scaffold and MEWP users, and utility, oil and gas, manufacturing and warehouse workers who go up ladders, platforms or structures as part of the job.
This course is written for Alberta. For work under another province's rules, or if you only need general awareness, the general Fall Protection Online Certification course may be a better fit.
Course Content
The course has eight modules. It uses 3D-animated scenarios and real-world examples, and covers Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Act and Code throughout.
Alberta Requirements
Section 141(2) of the OHS Code lists what fall protection training must include: a review of current Alberta legislation, fall protection plans, the methods used at the work site, hazard identification, anchor selection, connecting hardware, the effect of a fall on the body, pre-use inspection, emergency response, and hands-on practice.
Online training covers the knowledge side, not all of it. The Code also requires practice in inspecting, fitting, adjusting and connecting equipment and in emergency response, plus a briefing on the hazards at your own site (section 141(3)). The employer has to arrange those. This course includes practical evaluation tools and guides supervisors can use to check workers on the hands-on items.
For a full walk-through of the Code, including when a fall protection plan is required and who is responsible for what, read our guide to fall protection training in Alberta. Our fall arrest vs travel restraint article explains how the two main systems differ.
